GamersUnitedGG Blogging Competition: Week 1 – Character Building

The lovely Luna, over at GamersUnitedGG, is running a very exciting blogging competition throughout January called the GamersUnitedGG Blogging Competition. Each week for three weeks, we are being given prompts from which we are to construct blog posts answering her questions. This article is my entry for week one!

The prompt for week one’s post is:

  • Week 1: January 8 – January 15th โ€“ Youโ€™re designing a video game and the main character needs to be created. Describe your main character. What 3 power ups or abilities would you choose for the character and why?

This is a tricky one! As I’m not restricted to a particular type of game, there really is a lot of options here. I’m not the world’s most creative person, but luckily, I do have somewhere to start from. At the end of last year, I wrote a post as part of Adventure Rules’ Charming and Open event, in which I had to come up with a story for the next edition of my favourite video game series. Therefore for my answer I think it makes sense to stick with that same idea.

My lead will be female, and called Osha. The idea of the story is about saving the environment, so she should look appropriate for that, I guess you could call her look ‘practical’ and also ‘weathered’. Basically she’ll be scruffy. Torn jeans with big pockets for carrying stuff, short spiky hair and a T-shirt with a picture of her favourite bird on it. There will be a bit of the story though where she has to go undercover within high-society, and for this she has to wear a top hat and tails, just…because. Character-wise she will be intent on saving the planet so I guess she is tough but also quick-witted and with a dark sense of humour.

In terms of power ups and abilities, I had to think long and hard to come up with three, but for me (because my blog is about being rubbish at video games) the first pick was a no brainer:

Invincibility

Perhaps more reminiscent of Mario than the JRPG I was planning on writing, but still, I think it will come in handy here, if even for brief moments at a time.

Haste

Haste has always been my favourite Final Fantasy status effect. Don’t ask me why. It just gives you that edge without at the same time making you feel ridiculously overpowered.

Healing

More of an ability than a power-up, but I want my main character to be a healer. There are two reasons for this: Firstly, being in charge of healing feels safer than letting the AI do it, and secondly, because it’s a little unusual for the party’s lead to be a healer.

I think the combination of these things would give my character the perfect skills to stay alive on the battlefield, casting Invincibility at a dire point, casting Haste to speed things along, and then, with Haste active, casting a flurry of Healing spells to make everything right with the world.

Thanks for reading and hope you like my picks, make sure you check out all the other entries, and get working on your own – you gotta be in it to win it!

  1. Awesome post! I am happy that you have decided to enter in the contest and I hope that you have a great time with the prompts. They are all connected to a central theme ๐Ÿ˜‰ . I love the breakdown of your characters appearance and purpose. The name Osha is awesome! It reminds me of Ocean so I picture green and blue colors. Thank you for participating and week 2’s prompt is up! The results and points for week 1 will be posted on Wednesday!
