PS4 is in the House!

Hello readers. If you’ve been following Shoot the Rookie for a while you may know that there has been something missing from my life. A space to be filled. A void into which I could only stare sadly.

Yes, that’s right, I have been lacking a PS4…

…but no longer!

The space on my gaming shelf is now home to an adorable little PS4, and to mark this occasion I have written this celebratory post for your enjoyment.

I’d been planning to buy one for quite some time. A year? Two years? For all eternity? Who knows! It had been a long time anyway.

PS4 box

The time had finally come to take action, and so on September 1st 2018 I went to the video game store (G-Force Games) and bought a nice shiny PS4, bundled complete with 2015’s Bloodborne.

There had been much swithering in my household over whether or not to buy a PS4 Pro instead. It is a lot more money but had seemed like a good idea. However, the realisation struck us that this console generation might be near its end and at the moment everything will play on a standard PS4. Also, from reading copious reviews, it seemed as if the PS4 Pro’s main point of interest was looking amazing on a giant and ridiculously expensive television. Since my TV doesn’t even display in 1080p, I decided there was no point spending the extra money.

Anyway, technical specifications are not something I tend to think about that much. Oh no. I prefer to think about GAMES! Obviously I’m way behind most people here. Many of you will already have played a lot of the PS4 games I’m interested in, but since they may contribute heavily to what I write about here for the foreseeable future, I’m just going to go ahead and talk about the games I’ve got and the games I want!

The fact that these both get the same age rating disturbs me slightly

The first games that the Shoot the Rookie household has for the PS4 are Persona 5 and the aforementioned Bloodborne. I’m about 6 hours into Persona 5 and it seems excellent, although much darker than I had expected. It is also still leading me around by hand, so I’m hoping to get a bit more freedom to roam around soon. As you may know if you read the blog regularly, I am a bit of a JRPG junkie so am very excited about playing more and getting to know the characters and battle mechanics.

Bloodborne on the other hand is a game for my partner to play. I am far too rubbish at video games (and too much of a wimp) to play it myself, but I did have a little go in a safe area. From the little I played I can say it feels amazing and I’m particularly liking the way the ‘dodge’ feels. From watching my partner playing, I can also add that it is a beautiful looking game with wonderfully atmospheric music and sound design. It is a much scarier game than I had expected, thinking it to be more action than horror, but really it is both. The fighting mechanics, which utilise a stamina meter, are extremely clever, as is the levelling system. Although it received an Edge 10, I’m not sure it is going to be quite there for me due to the lack of character interaction and story, but looking forward to finding out more anyway!

There are loads of other titles I’m excited to play on the PS4, including, but not limited to, Final Fantasy XV, Tales of Berseria, Horizon Zero Dawn and NieR: Automata, but they will have to wait for my bank account to refill.

In the meantime I’ve found there are also a pleasing number of demos to play. I’m a big fan of demos. They not only give you a chance to try out games you are looking forward to, but also allow you to try games you are not interested in, in order to confirm if your lack of interest was correct. We went on a bit of demo spree and got the demos for Resident Evil 7, The World of Final Fantasy, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 6, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and .Hack//G.U. Last Recode (yep, that one’s a bit of a mouthful!). I haven’t got around to looking at them all yet (although Uncharted has been tried and deleted. Still not interested), but I’m excited to see what they are all like.

Given the amount of time it takes me to play a game, and the fact that there are still a ton of games I want for the Nintendo Switch, I haven’t thought too much about upcoming releases for the PS4. That said, I haven’t been particularly hyped about any of the recent announcements (apart from the Spyro Reignited Trilogy!!!). For now though there is plenty to keep me busy, and I’m looking forward to what will come next.

So did you enjoy any of the games I’ve mentioned here (no spoilers please)? Perhaps there are some titles you’ve played that you think I’d love? Or maybe you are just after any opportunity to chat about your favourite PS4 games? Let me know your thoughts below, or come find me on Twitter or Facebook!

Thanks for reading,

  1. I also recently got a PS4! I got the Spider-man PS4 Pro to go along with my 4K TV at home. It’s beautiful and games are fantastic so far. My first game was Spider-man (came with the console) and, since you hinted at loving stories up above, you’ll probably love Spider-man. It has an amazing story! I’m currently playing through Bloodborne (I love it), Digimon Cyber Sleuth: Hackers Memory, and I just bought The Witcher 3 and The Elder Scrolls Online (again) and I plan on playing the crap out of both. I also have Horizon Zero Dawn and so far it’s really good, but I haven’t even played for an hour because of Bloodborne :).

Persona 5 is on my wishlist, but I probably won’t own it until it goes on sale. Final Fantasy XV is fantastic. I played it all the way through on PC. Tales of Berseria is good too. I wasn’t a big fan of Nier Automata though 🙂 .

  2. Did I see Bloodborne? You have joined us Hunter (don’t know if you can tell but I love Bloodborne).

If you’re interested in the Yakuza games, I’d start with Yakuza 0. It’s a prequel and it’s one of the best games on PS4.

Final Fantasy XV is must play imo, it’s one of the best games I have played this gen. NieR Automata is very good but prepare for weirdness.

You can’t go wrong with Resident Evil 7, it’s a fantastic game. It’s not the only RE game on there though, Revelations 2 and RE 4, 5 and 6 are also available.

As for fighting games, there is Tekken 7, Injustice 2, Guilty Gear XRD Revelator and the upcoming Soul Calibur VI.

  3. I saw pictures of that Spider Man PS4 – my goodness it is beautiful!! It does sound like an amazing game. Weirdly though, I really don’t like super hero stuff. Don’t ask me why (I don’t actually know why!), it’s just a weird quirk I have!

What is that Digimon game like? I’ve never played a Digimon game but was obsessed with the show when I was younger!

  4. I didn’t know you liked Bloodborne! It seems very cool so far (I think we’re about 15 hours in).

Resi 7 is a definite possibility, I was really put off by it being 1st person though (don’t ask me why, just a weird quirk I have!)

I’m sure I’ll get Tekken 7 eventually, I do love Tekken but I was disappointed with Tekken 6. I don’t really play online so I was wondering what kind of offline story mode/arcade mode/local versus modes it has?

  5. From the limited games I have played on PS4 I would say get Horizon Zero Dawn. I loved it. I’m really enjoying Yakuza 0 and it’s apparently a great start point for the Yakuza series as it’s a prequel so if you are interested go for that. We have games that we haven’t tried yet but just need to find the time…

  6. That Spider-man PS4 is a real beauty :). And it’s totally cool that you’re not into superhero stuff. Not everyone is and that’s fine.

Digimon Hackers Memory is like Pokemon, but not as good as Pokemon. You hack into multiple small zones, add Digimon to your collection, fight bad guys, etc. It’s a good game, but it’s not on sale anymore and I can’t recommend it for $60. when I only paid $20 for mine. I’m the opposite. I never liked Digimon and was completely crazy about Pokemon lol.

  7. Bloodborne is fantastic and it’s one of the best games I’ve played this gen. The music and setting are divine.

Resi 7 is good and I could understand the hesitation with it being first person, I was the same way. I played the demo and I was sold. It’s really good, a great return to survival horror for the series.

Tekken 7 is fantastic gameplay wise.
    Offline modesfor Tekken 7
    Story Mode
    Arcade Mode
    Practice
Treasure Battle – Endless fights against a.i. until you decide to quit (similar to ghost battle) You earn money and customisation items.
    Versus
    Character customisation.
PS4 version also gets Jukebox mode which allows you to change music of each stage around and you pretty much have the entire Tekken series soundtrack to choose from.

  8. I’ve just done exactly the same! I bought a PS4 a few weeks ago, but it’s partly a birthday present so I’ll get to use it on Sunday! I got it in a bundle with God of War, ESO and Crash but I’ve also bought Persona 5 and Bloodbourne to go with it! I mainly bought it to play Spyro, but since it’s been delayed I guess I’ll just have to wait longer.

I’ve got Tales of Berseria, NieR:Automata and BBTAG on PC already, but I’m interested in getting Gravity Rush. I’ll basically just be buying exclusives for PS4 as PC will always be my preferred platform. I might get Red Dead Redemption 2, but I’m hoping that will be released on PC later on.

  9. Ooh, yeah, Brandon suggested Yakuza 0 as well so i’ll have to look into it. Really looking forward to playing Horizon Zero Dawn, I’ve heard nothing but good things about it!

It’s always tought trying to find the time to play everything, but you’ll get round to them eventually i’m sure 🙂

  10. Haha, totally the opposite of me, I was never bothered about Pokemon! I’ll leave the Digimon game for now though, doesn’t really sound like my kind of thing. Thank you for all the suggestions 🙂

  11. That makes sense!

I’m excited to see Spyro as well, it is only a few years since I originally played the first game but I can’t wait to see how the new version looks.

Happy Birthday for Sunday in case I don’t speak to you before then! Have fun with your pressies 🙂
