Hello readers and welcome to the Third Day of Blogmas as we join in with this fabulous Christmas sing-a-long, all brought to you by the fantastic mind of Athena from AmbiGaming.
So! What are we singing about today? Well…
On the 3rd day of Christmas, the gamers said to me: What are 10 reasons you’d play a game
Lets sing!
On the 1st day of Christmas, the gamers said to me: What are 12 favorite gaming memories?
On the 2nd day of Christmas, the gamers said to me: Tell us 11 games you love!
On the 3rd day of Christmas, the gamers said to me: What are 10 reasons you’d play a game
Hmm, this one is tricky, but here goes:
- Series – If the game is part of a series I already love then I’m highly likely to pick it up and play it. For example, if a new Xenoblade Chronicles or Final Fantasy game comes out, I’m almost certainly going to get it regardless of other people’s opinions on it.
- Developer – If the game is made by a company I trust and respect then I’m likely to at least consider playing any game they make. Platinum Games and Monolith Soft for example already have my attention. I won’t necessarily play all of their games but when they announce a new one I’ll always consider playing it.
- Notable People – There are certain people in the world of game development who I follow closely and who’s work consistently impresses me. Therefore if I see that Shinji Mikami has a new game, or that Nobuo Uematsu has done the music or that David Hayter features in the voice cast, then I’ll certainly be interested.
- Demo – If a game has a free, playable demo then I’m much more likely to pick the game up than if it doesn’t. There are a lot of games I’ve bought on the back of playing the demo, including Bayonetta, Tales of Vesperia and Rayman Legends, and I doubt I would have bought any of them if I hadn’t had a chance to try the demo first.
- JRPGs – Lets face it. JRPGs are my favourite type of game and if I see a new one is coming out there is a good chance that I’ll end up buying it or at the very least investigating it further.
- Goose – If the protagonist is a goose then there is a very good chance I’m going to play the game. House House’s upcoming Untitled Goose Game is the main case in point here, although Foam Sword’s upcoming Knights and Bikes also features a goose prominently.
Image from: https://goose.game/ - Good Feeling – Sometimes you just get a positive vibe off a game. This can be based on seeing a trailer or reading an article but mostly it comes from finding out a bit about the people behind the game and thinking ‘yeah, these are cool people who are passionate about what they are doing’. The aforementioned House House are the perfect case in point here.
- Style – Yep, sometimes hair and fashion are important draws for me. The best examples of this are probably Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, although I have to say that some of the hair in Final Fantasy XV was definitely a draw.
- Reviews – This doesn’t apply to all games, but if a game gets really good reviews and interests me in some other way I’m much more likely to pick it up than if it gets average reviews. Bloodborne is probably the best example of this, as it isn’t necessarily the type of game I’d usually pick up.
- Not one of… – Basically, I can be interested in playing a wide variety of games, regardless of which of these other categories they fit into – unless they are one of a couple of things that I veto, i.e. the game isn’t a first person shooter, it isn’t an online battle royale game, or for that matter any game where the majority of the content is online. I’ll consider pretty much any game except those ones.
So there we have it! 10 reasons I’d play a game. Make sure you head on over to Athena’s place to check out the whole collaboration and remember to come back tomorrow to see what day 4 has in store.
Thanks for reading,

I’ve been reading these Blogmas entries throughout the day and one I just thought of is “it’s similar to X.” Like, if someone tells me “this game is like Phoenix Wright” or “it’s like Fire Emblem but space” then I’m probably gonna give it a try.

Demos are definitely a good way to get a feel for a game! More games need those, I think.
