Seriously Geeky Sundays – Freedom of the Press

Hello dear readers and welcome to a brand new post here on Shoot the Rookie. Before I begin I would like to issue an apology to you for the general lack of activity here of late. I’m sure I don’t have to explain why this has happened, but rest assured I am now back and feeling motivated! So what have I got lined up for you today? Well as you can probably tell from the title, this post is an entry in the Seriously Geeky Sundays event that has been brilliantly masterminded by Heather over at Just Geeking By, and the theme this week is journalism.

For those who haven’t seen it yet, Seriously Geeky Sundays is a fabulous weekly blogging event that asks participants to answer a series of questions on a specific topic. If you fancy taking part, or just wanna find out more, make sure you check out all the info over at Just Geeking By. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Heather for putting so much time and effort into this event, I think it is exactly what the community needs right now!

Anyway! As I mentioned this week’s theme is journalism, so let’s take a look at the questions and my answers to them.

1. What is your favourite fictional media outlet?

Space Channel 5 – Space Channel 5

Strictly speaking I’m not sure how reliable Space Channel 5 are at reporting the news, but the universe that they report on is certainly one of the most ridiculous, and the corrupt nature of the company gives their story a weirdly believable feel. Lead reporter Ulala is definitely one of the best around, and possibly the only one in the business who is also tasked with saving the world through the power of dance. Or something like that.

2. Who is your favourite fictional journalist?

Ichiko Ohya – Persona 5

It’s time for me to let you in on a little secret readers. When I was younger I wanted to be a journalist. It never happened of course, but if it had I like to think I would have been a bit like Ohya. I mean just look at her! She is sassy, she fights for justice in a corrupt world, chases the truth even though she is told not to and drinks far too much. She should possibly refrain from encouraging under age drinking, but then again she is the Devil confidant so what else would you expect?

3. Who is your favourite fictional photographer?

Prompto Argentum – Final Fantasy XV

My knowledge of Prompto actually comes from the Final Fantasy XV anime Brotherhood, rather than the game (I’ll get to it eventually folks…), but even in that short time with him he really captured my heart. He just seems like such a warm hearted, innocent boy and his love of photography and his desire to record the journey of the four main characters is a really lovely touch that makes him seem really human. He also likes dogs a lot, which goes in his favour.

4. What is your favourite fictional interview?

Harry Caray (played by Will Ferrell) interviews Dr. Kent Wahler (played by Jeff Goldblum) – Saturday Night Live

I’ve never actually heard the real Harry Caray but Will Ferrell’s impersonation of him interviewing an astrophysicist played by Jeff Goldblum is comedy genius. Whether it is declaring that the Sun is his favourite planet or pondering what would happen if the Moon was made of spare ribs, Ferrell’s delivery is perfect and Goldblum’s ability to just about stop himself bursting into uncontrolled laughter is priceless. Just in case you haven’t seen it, definitely check it out now, you won’t be disappointed!

5. If you could interview any fictional character who would it be?

Vash the Stampede – Trigun

On the face of it Vash would make an excellent interviewee. He has done so much and had so many experiences that you would never run out of questions. There would be some serious stuff, like asking about his thoughts on pacifism and about his relationship with his brother, and some fun stuff like what he really thinks about those girls from Bernadelli Insurance, but the big reason I’d like to interview him is to give him a chance to clear his name and get that ridiculous bounty off his head!

6. Which character would you like to see given an absolute grilling live on TV and why?

Q – Star Trek

There are SO many things Q could be grilled about it is untrue. I mean, where does he get off wearing all those dumb costumes? Or just showing up in people’s rooms uninvited? Or putting humanity on trial and threatening to turn us back into organic goop? He is as infuriating as he is brilliant and for that reason I’d love to see the tables well and truly turned on him.

So! What do you make of my answers? Would you have picked any of these or can you think of better examples? Let me know below in comments or even better go check out Just Geeking By to find out how to take part yourself!

Thanks for reading,

  1. I’ll be honest, it was the only thing I could think of for that question but it is so good! Still completely cracks me up after all this time 🙂

  2. Q!! That guy does need a serious grilling, haha. I love how Captain Sisko punches him out in a scene on DS9, by the way 😂

  3. Welcome to Seriously Geeky Sundays Pix and thank you for those kind words ❤ This prompt is doing as much for me as it is for you guys so all I can say is thank you to everyone who takes part. Reading your answers each week always makes me smile and I love learning about new characters and fandoms. I have absolutely no idea about any of the ones you've discussed, for example, but I've learned something new and it's always great to hear about what other people love.

  4. Thank you! It is great to have finally got involved, it really is a fantastic concept and I’m looking forward to doing more of them. I’ve read a couple of other entries (need to catch up on reading them all though) and I definitely agree that it is really cool seeing what other people pick and being introduced to new fandoms through it!
