Seriously Geeky Sundays – What Makes You Smile?

Hello dear readers and welcome once again to a Seriously Geeky Sunday! This time around we are looking at things that make us smile so why not join me to find out what geeky things put a smile on my face!

For those who are new to this, Seriously Geeky Sundays is an amazing community event organised by the most excellent Heather over at Just Geeking By! For more info and to check out all the posts and upcoming questions make sure you visit the Seriously Geeky Sundays page!

Right! So on to today’s questions:

What TV shows do you love?

There are so many! Too many to name probably. I’ve talked a lot about Star Trek before when answering these questions as it was my first TV love. My favourite Star Trek series is DS9. It was such a huge departure at the time – much darker than TNG, and I just love it. I love a lot of sci fi. Other favourites include Babylon 5 and Farscape. Again they are quite dark shows that have epic stories but still manage to have a lot of humour. I like a bunch of other stuff too, with The West Wing, Homicide: Life on the Street and Due South being particular favourites. Of course I also like anime and to be honest that is mostly what I watch these days. I wrote a Top 10 Anime Shows list a while back and would now add My Hero Academia and Mr Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues to that list.

What are your favourite movie genres?

I have a few favourites. I really like high-school based anime films (A Silent Voice, Anthem of the Heart and I Want to Eat Your Pancreas are good examples), and I like some sci fi films (mostly just Star Trek films though). I really like horror films, from the silliness of Shaun of the Dead to the pure terror of The Shining or the unbearable atmosphere of The Wicker Man. I like a lot of comedy films too, particularly those featuring members of the Frat Pack, including titles such as Dodgeball and Anchorman. My favourite movie genre though has to be Christmas films. I love Christmas and always watch loads of films over the festive period, with favourites being Love Actually, Elf and Trading Places.

What do you like to read?

I’m actually not much of a reader. When I was younger I read all the time, mostly sci fi stuff, but in the last few years I haven’t been making time to read books. The thing I read the most is probably blog posts, followed closely by newspaper and magazine articles, particularly in the video game magazine Edge. If we are talking things that make me smile though, the thing I read (or used to, the column doesn’t exist anymore) that makes me smile the most is a column in The Guardian called Inspect a Gadget which on the surface just reviews kitchen appliances but is actually the funniest column in existence. You will never look at an egg poacher the same again!

What about games?

I like a lot of different sorts of games for sure, but as is probably apparent from most of my writing my favourite video game genre is the JRPG. I think this is because I like games that focus on the story and the characters. They also tend to be very long which gives you plenty of time to enjoy the worlds and this really appeals to me. That said, the games that make me smile the most are probably Captain Toad Treasure Tracker and Untitled Goose Game due to their sheer charm and wit.

What geeky thing made you smile this week?

Can I say Xenoblade Chronicles? I’ve talked about it too much?! Ok then, something else. I thought of lots of things when thinking this question through but I’ll go with a random moment from a game I’m currently playing – Final Fantasy X. The party just got to this mountain area and seem pretty underpowered, which has resulted in us fleeing from quite a few battles. After about 20 minutes this was getting a bit demoralising, but then a random encounter with some enemies we hadn’t fought before popped up. Noticing Wakka had a full Overdrive meter, the only option seemed to be to use it. Luckily, we played it just right and ended up with the correct element for his Overdrive attack, which downed all three of the enemies in one go! I literally had my hands in the air cheering!

What quote always makes you smile?

“Plus Ultra!!!” which is a recurring quote in My Hero Academia is what I’m going to go with here. It is always delivered with sheer exuberance and you know every time someone shouts it that something spectacular is going to happen. More than that though, if the phrase is used it means the character is going all out and is going to give everything they have to deal with the situation they are in, and for me that never stops being inspiring!

So what do you think? Do any of these geeky things make you smile too? Or maybe you have some other smiley things you’d like to share? Either way let me know below in comments and don’t forget to check out all things geeky over at Just Geeking By!

Thanks for reading,

  1. Oh yes, Due South! I love that show and keep threatening to go back and rewatch it because I don’t think I ever actually got to watch it all the way through.

  2. If I remember right, it might have trailed off a bit towards the end but I think it is still worth watching. I’m definitely going to be singing the theme tune all day now 🙂

  3. I’ve never seen it in the cinema but me and my partner are the same – we watch it every Christmas, it is definitely one of my favourite Christmas films!
