Hello dear readers and welcome to this week’s Seriously Geeky Sunday post which hopefully will have you rolling in the aisles! Well OK, I’m not that funny, but this week’s theme is all about the things that make us laugh, so why not join me on a journey through the funniest media I can think of!
Before I get to the questions I just want to say a huge thanks as always to Heather from Just Geeking By for coming up with this – the work you put into this event is really inspiring!
Now on to the funny stuff! Let’s get on with today’s questions!
What makes you laugh?
Props to Heather for this question as it is one that requires careful thought to answer. There are quite a lot of different things that make me laugh but I think the best way to describe my sense of humour is that I like absurdity. I like people saying things that don’t make any sense logically but are still somehow hilarious. I like silliness and fun and a certain over-the-topness. For the most part things have to be good natured for me to find them funny. That being said, some of my choices for the other questions may slightly contradict what I’ve written so far, and that is the beauty of this question – what makes you laugh is really not an easy thing to describe!
What TV show makes you laugh?
Mr Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues

This is the daftest anime I’ve ever seen. It explores the life of an employee at an evil corporation who will one day go on to be a high ranking employee but at this time is simply a middle manager who has to deal with all the weird, wonderful and often trivial things that the role brings with it. How can he motivate his team? Does he even know how to use PowerPoint? What can he do to stay in his boss’s good books? How much pork cutlet bowl can one man eat? What is Twitter anyway? These questions and many more are answered in this thoroughly absurd look at office life from the point of view of a man who will eventually become an evil leader but for the time being is stuck trying to balance the competing needs of his boss and his staff.
What is your favourite comedy movie?
Dodgeball

Did I say last week that I really like sports comedies? Well I do and Dodgeball is my favourite. An underdog story about a total slacker who has to win a Dodgeball tournament to keep his gym open against the odds, this film is totally absurd in all ways. Both Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn shine as the leading characters, and the entire support cast is wonderful too. The invention of the fictional TV station – ESPN 8 The Ocho is a work of genius, and any film that features a squirrel waterskiing and pretends it’s an actual sport is going to be OK with me. Almost every line is a work of comedy genius and at this point I can pretty much quote the whole film!
What scene always makes you crack up?
‘Galo’s at Soup!’ By Amazing Artist Yellow
Ok so this is a bit of a cheat as it isn’t actually a scene from anything, but rather a fan made scene set in the Promare universe where leading character Galo Thymos is having some trouble buying clothes. Its humour fits with the film perfectly and even thinking about it makes me crack up – you really have to watch it to understand so please click the link in the heading (I didn’t want to embed it without permission!) As you may have guessed by now Promare is one of my favourite things of all time, and the fan culture around it is second to none. I am so, so grateful to Amazing Artist Yellow for coming up with something so perfect for all fans of the film to enjoy, and I encourage you to check out their work and give them a follow!
Who is your favourite funny guy/girl?
L – Xenoblade Chronicles X

L (or L’cirufe if you can be bothered) is a mysterious alien who lives on the planet Mira where our human protagonists crash land after fleeing the destruction of Earth. He ends up teaming up with the humans and after that we are frequently treated to some of the funniest lines in all of video gaming. He has this habit of trying to use English phrases but getting them all a little bit wrong and each one is hilarious. Some classic examples of this are: “We won that with our hands down”, “It’s a horse-eat-horse world!” and my personal favourite “We put a sock on them!”. He is comedy gold even if he doesn’t mean to be and for that reason he was very rarely out of my party when playing the game!
Who is your favourite comedian?
Stewart Lee

I’ve been a fan of Stewart Lee since he did the show Fist of Fun with Richard Herring back in 1995 and have been impressed by pretty much everything I’ve seen from him since. His humour can be pretty brutal, and has at times garnered criticism from various Christian groups, a point which can only make me like him more. He is probably the most deadpan comedian I’ve ever seen, to the point that you are not always even sure what the joke is, and his seemingly instinctual ability to find humour in anything is beyond compare, a point which was exemplified when I saw him perform at Glastonbury a few years ago and all the power went out just before he was due onstage. I don’t think he would be everyone’s cup of tea, but for me there is no one else like him.
So what do you think? Do any of my picks make you laugh too? Let me know below in comments and don’t forget to head on over to Just Geeking By to see all the answers to today’s questions and find out how to take part yourself!
