Seriously Geeky Sundays: Ahoy Matey!

Ahoy there readers and welcome to another Seriously Geeky Sunday! This week’s questions are all about pirates, so let’s all don our best eye patches and talking parrots, and delve into the murky world of fictional piracy!

This one’s for the mighty sea. Mischief, gold and piracy!

The Dropkick Murphys, Rose Tattoo

So! Pirates! Another excellent topic for Seriously Geeky Sundays and one that offers quite a lot of options when it comes to answering the questions. As you may know, Monkey Island is one of my favourite game series so expect it to feature heavily in my answers, but also look out for some other interesting fandoms!

Before we get going I just want to say a big thank you as always to the wonderful Heather from Just Geeking By for coming up with yet another excellent set of questions. I encourage you all to head on over to her site to find out more about Seriously Geeky Sundays!

Right! On with the questions:

What is your favourite pirate fandom?

The Monkey Island Series

If you’ve ever read anything else I’ve ever written this will come as no surprise to you. Monkey Island pretty much defined my childhood and was probably my first experience of pirates. Nearly 30 years later it remains my favourite pirate fandom and nothing else has ever really come close. From its humour to its music to its characters, Monkey Island really is a special series that will always be in my heart.

Who is your favourite pirate character?

Guybrush Threepwood – The Monkey Island Series

Well duh! Of course it’s Guybrush Threepwood (mighty pirate). He arrives on Mêlée Island a hopeless wannabe pirate and to be honest never really gets any better, but despite his inadequacies as a pirate I loved him from the moment I first saw him.

Who is your favourite pirate crew?

Balthier and Fran – Final Fantasy XII

Sky Pirates Fran and Balthier are an awesome team and probably the two best characters in Final Fantasy XII. Fran’s intelligent scheming is the perfect foil for Balthier’s ‘leading man’ antics and both have their own compelling backstories. It doesn’t hurt that they are both outrageously gorgeous either *wink*.

What pirate ship would you love to sail on?

The Bentenmaru – Bodacious Space Pirates

From Sky Pirates to Space Pirates now as we blast into space on the Bentenmaru. Going into space is only one of the reasons I want to ride this ship though. I’d love to hang out with the eccentric crew and make friends with Captain Marika, as well as accompanying them on their ‘piracy’ missions which consist of boarding luxury cruise ships and pretending to be scary pirates for the guest’s entertainment.

Who is the best pirate swordsman?

Carla – The Secret of Monkey Island

Back to Monkey Island now with the awesome Carla, the sword-master of Mêlée Island. She is totally badass and thinks Guybrush is a complete loser (which he is) and so is really snarky with him. After some persuading though she does eventually help Guybrush on his way to furthering his pirating fantasy.

Who is the best pirate sidekick?

Niddler – The Pirates of Dark Water

I really struggled coming up with an answer for this and was eventually drawn back to one of my favourite childhood cartoons. Niddler is a kinda monkey bird thing who is initially with the bad guys but soon changes sides. He is a bit of a wimp and not always the best in a tight spot but he is a true loyal friend to the main character and it is very hard not to have a soft spot for him!

So what do think? Some interesting pirates in there I think! What about you? Are you a fan of any piracy-based fandoms? Maybe you enjoy cosplaying as pirate characters? Either way let me know below in comments and head on over to Just Geeking By to read all of this week’s entries and find out how to take part yourself!

Thanks for reading,

  1. It is definitely the first thing that comes to mind when I think about pirates! Totally agree with you on the ending to the second game – I mean I love the second game right up until the end which totally ruins the whole thing! Thank you for reading 🙂
